About The Course Team
The Trauma-Informed Toolkit for Educators is designed to provide educators with a deeper understanding of trauma and its effects on childhood development, while offering a set of tools to help create supportive, healing centered, trauma-informed environments within a wide range of academic and recreational settings where students can grow.

Created by educators for educators
A holistic approach to trauma-informed education
Based on the expertise of child psychologists, social workers, creative arts therapists and trauma specialists
New York City Children’s Theater Education Department has a long history of working and training through a trauma-informed lens. Our experience in trauma-informed education began in 2016, when New York City Children’s Theater was hired as the sole theater arts partner in a partnership with the Mayor’s Office and the Department of Education’s Division of Early Childhood Education.
For the past 4 years, we have provided an annual 28-week residency program for the Afterschool Reading Club (ARC) program in 36 Department of Homeless Services (DHS) shelters and DOE schools citywide. Our staff members have become leaders in the field of trauma-informed practice. Director of Education Sara Morgulis moderated the keynote panel at the NYC Arts in Education Roundtable Face to Face Conference in April 2020 named “Arts and Healing: Trauma-Informed Arts in Education.”
In Summer of 2019, the NYCCT Education team presented a workshop named “Managing Education Programs through a Trauma-Informed Lens: How to Support Teaching Artists Working with Students Experiencing Trauma” at the American Association for Theatre and Education (AATE) conference.
All of this experience led us to create The Trauma-Informed Toolkit for Educators as a way to share our trauma-informed practices with you and your community.

New York City Children's Theater
The mission of New York City Children’s Theater is to promote children’s literacy and social development through professional theater productions and arts-in-education programs. We reach children and their communities with a wide range of programming, including full-scale productions, small touring shows, interactive workshops and in-school residencies, and engage with them in traditional theater spaces, school auditoriums, classrooms and cultural venues in their neighborhoods.
We demonstrate that engaging young people in the arts has a positive impact on their cognitive, emotional and social development, and furthers a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
